9/2 – Arrive Rome. Home base in apartment near the Pantheon.
9/3-5 – Rome
9/6 – Day trip to Ostia Antica. Return to Rome.
9/7 – Train to Siena (in Tuscany). Home base in B&B (Palazzo Bruchi) in medieval city center.
9/8 – Day trip to San Gimignano (still in Tuscany). Return to Siena.
9/9 – Day trip to Greve (in the Chianti area of Tuscany). Annual wine-tasting event. Return to Siena.
9/10 – Day trip to hill towns in Chianti: Castellina (Etruscan tombs), Volpaia, Vertine, Radda. Return to Siena.
9/11 – Foiano (near Cortona) for morning market. Then to Cortona (Tuscany). Return to Siena.
9/12 – Siena
9/13 – Train to Venice. Home base at Albergo Doni, canalside hotel.
9/14 – Day trip to islands of Murano (glassblowing), Burano (lace making/colorful houses). Return to Venice.
9/15-16 – Venice
9/17 – Drive to Angera on the shore of Lago Maggiore north of Milano. Home base at Hotel Pavone, 5 minutes from the water’s edge. This is the town where my grandmother was born.
9/18 – Angera and Ranco. Ranco, 1.5 miles from Angera, is where my grandfather was born.
9/19 – Day trip to Arona (market day) by ferry across the lake. Then later back to Angera and Ranco.
9/20 – Day trip to Lake Como. Drive up west shore of Lake Como; across the border into Lugano, Switzerland. Return to Angera.
9/21 – All day ferry trip from southern end to northern tip of Lago Maggiore, ending at Locarno, Switzerland. Return to Angera.
9/22 – Sesto Calende, a few miles from Angera; Ranco for lunch with cousins; Somma Lombardo for dinner with cousins. Return to Angera.
9/23 – Milano airport to return home.
